Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Topped by No. 8 Ursinus, 18-11

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's lacrosse saw its four-game winning streak snapped by No. 8 Ursinus College 18-11 in non-conference action Wednesday.

The Red Hawks (4-1) fall to 1-5 all-time against the Bears (5-0), including dropping the last four games.

Montclair needed just 1:49 to open the scoring against their nationally-ranked opponents. Senior SKYLER FRANCISCO ripped a shot past the Bears goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the year to get MSU on the scoreboard early. Ursinus netted the next two goals to pull in front, but the Red Hawks offense struck for the following four markers in the quarter. Francisco leveled the game with 6:36 left to even things up before junior ROBERT BRENNAN gave the hosts the lead at the 5:02 mark. Brennan added his second tally of the game nearly two minutes later before sophomore TYLER MCCREERY converted a man-up opportunity to close out first-period scoring.

The Bears responded well in the second half, scoring four of the first five markers. After Hakan Atillasoy scored with 11:59 left, JESSE JAMES WEST scored off a Francisco pass to extend the lead to two just 28 seconds later. Ursinus pulled even with the next goals before Francisco found McCreery down low, and the sophomore notched his second tally of the afternoon. With time trickling down in the half, Atillasoy completed his hat-trick with 58 seconds to go and sent the two sides into halftime even at seven.

Montclair held a 24-18 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes and forced 10 Bear turnovers.

The Bears broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring five times in the opening 10:31. McCreery stopped the run off an assist from CHRISTIAN BOYLE, but the momentum was short-lived. The visitors bridged the third and fourth quarters with four consecutive tallies to take a 16-8 lead. West and sophomore JOE COVINO cut into the lead with scores 27 seconds apart before McCreery notched his second man-up goal of the night to trim the deficit to five at 16-11. MSU would be able to get any closer, as Ursinus scored twice more to cap off the scoring.

A day after being named to the USILA Team of the Week, McCreery led the Red Hawks with four goals on 10 shots. Francisco tallied two goals and two assists while West added two goals and a helper. Junior KYLE MATTHEWS was 17-of-26 in the "X" and scooped up a team-high seven ground balls. Junior MATTHEW MCLAREN made 10 saves in the setback. Ben Minardi had six goals for Ursinus, who also received three goals and an assist from Atillasoy and Tyler Falco.

Montclair returns home next Wednesday, hosting No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 pm. The Ducks have won the last four meetings between the two schools, including a 13-6 win last year at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
