Softball Takes Two at Spring Games; Tops Juniata, Westminster

Red Hawks Move to 4-0 on Florida Trip

Clermont, FL – The Montclair State softball team extended its winning streak to four knocking off Juniata College and Westminster (PA) at The Spring Games on Sunday afternoon.

Seniors BLAKE SAPERSTEIN and VALENTINA CUCCI combined for five hits and five RBI as MSU (4-0) scored multiple times in each of the final four innings for a 9-1 victory against Juniata. Junior AMBER POWERS delivered the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Montclair scored three times in a 4-1 triumph versus Westminster.

Juniata (0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Maggie Peck doubled down the left-field line scoring Molly Ulrich with the game's first run. But that would be all the scoring the Eagles would do the rest of the way.

MSU tied the game in the third as ELENA RADESICH lofted a sacrifice fly to score AMBER POWERS. Gallo followed with an RBI double plating AMBER REED for a 2-1 lead. The Red Hawks added three more in the fourth as Saperstein doubled in Powers and Penna. Cucci recorded an RBI double as Montclair State led 5-1.

ALEXIS LAW accounted for the first of three runs in the fifth with an RBI single, and run-scoring hits by Saperstein and Cucci widened the gap to 8-1. Penna ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a single scoring Gallo.

Righthander KAYLA VOLANTE allowed one hit and struck out three over the final three innings to record her second win in as many outings.

In the second game, righthander KIARA RUIZ and Titans' pitcher Madison Brown locked up in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings with each allowing a run.

Powers gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a base hit that scored Penna. Westminster tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Mackenzie Latess doubled scoring Alexis Yates.

That's the way the game would stay until the eighth with the tiebreaker rule in effect. ALEXIS LAW sacrificed JENNA MELUSO to third before Powers tripled to right field with the go-ahead run. Powers would score as Saperstein's grounder was mishandled, making the score 3-1. Radesich followed with a double for the final Red Hawk run.

Righthander NICOLE MAJEWSKI, who came on to retire the final two batters of the seventh, allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth putting runners at the corners. She then induced a ground out to end the game.

Powers was 3-for-4 with Radesich going 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Red Hawks finish off the first half of their 12-game schedule on Monday, March 9, with two games. Montclair faces Wheaton (MA) at 11:15 am, followed by a 1:15 contest against Washington & Jefferson.
