Newport News, VA – Quarterback Matt Dzierski threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Christopher Newport shut out Montclair State, 28-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Aeron Williams rushed for a two-yard score as the Captains (3-4, 1-2 NJAC), picked up their first NJAC victory of the season while evening the all-time series with MSU at 3-3.
MAKAI MICKENS rushed for 74 yards and
ERIC COWAN had six catches for 52 yards for Montclair State (1-6, 0-3 NJAC), which lost its third straight and was shut out for the first time since a 7-0 setback against Rowan in September 2013, a span of 75 games.
CNU got on the board quickly as Sean Wilkinson intercepted a pass on the second play of the game setting up Christopher Newport at the MSU 17. Dzierski completed five-yard pass to Williams, who then ran for five more down to the Red Hawks 7. Two plays later, Dzierski scored from six yards out for a 7-0 lead with 3:01 gone by in the opening quarter.
The Captains added to that lead later in the quarter with a 72-yard drive. Dzierski hit Garrison Mayo for 38 yards with a 29-yard completion to Kyle Lynch placing the ball at the MSU 2. Williams ran it in on the next play making the score 14-0 with 5:18 to play in the first.
CNU's third score came after it nearly gave up the ball. Dzierski was intercepted by
ZAHIR WILDER on the first play of the drive. But a roughing the passer call gave the ball back to Christopher Newport, who took full advantage of the second chance going 54 yards after the penalty. Adam Luncher had a 33-yard run on a 3
rd-and-14 to keep the possession alive. Dzierski later hit Lynch for 16 yards to the MSU 8 and found Xander Jedlick for the tourchdown and a 21-0 lead with five minutes remaining before halftime.
Dzierski hooked up with Mayo on a 12-yard score in the fourth for the final touchdown.

DORIAN GASHI had seven tackles for MSU with
MIKE RAMOS,
AUSTIN SMITH (a sack) and
BRENNAN RAY (interception) each recording six.
Montclair State will have the week off and return to action on Saturday, October 30 with its final home game of the season. The Red Hawks host Rowan University at Sprague Field with kickoff of the NJAC contest set for Noon.
