Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight, Beats Mt. St. Mary, 2-1

Lambert, Ambrosio Collect Goals in Victory

Newburgh, NY – Montclair State's TARA LAMBERT and SOFIA AMBROSIO each scored a goal as Montclair State posted its third straight victory, edging Mount St. Mary, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
AILEEN CAHILL added an assists as the Red Hawks upped their record to 10-4 on the season while knocking off the Knights (7-5-2) for the fifth time in as many all-time meetings.

Lambert put the first goal on the board for the Red Hawks in the eighth minute. The junior picked up a loose ball at the top left corner of the box and chipped a shot over the reach of Knights' goalkeeper Christina Kakavas.

Ambrosio extended the lead to 2-0 at the 53:29 mark recording her third goal of the year. Cahill gathered a ball along the left sideline in the defensive end of the field and drove to within 35 yards before sliding a pass through to Ambrosio, who sent a shot from the top of the box inside the right post.

Mount St. Mary cut that deficit in half six minutes later. Ashley Hunter served a ball into the lower right part of the box for Maggie-Ann Zecca, who battled a defender for the serve. Montclair keeper LINDSAY FREEWALT came out to collect the loose ball and a collision occurred between the three players. Zecca was able to regain her footing and easily tapped the ball into the open net.

However, that would be the only goal the Knights would muster as the Red Hawks limited Mount St. Mary to just three shots the rest of the way, none on frame.

Freewalt made the lone save for the Red Hawks in the final 45 minutes. Kakavas finished with six.

Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, October 23 with a key home NJAC contest with Rowan University at 1:00 pm. The Red Hawks (5-2) are currently in third-place with 15 points in the league standings, three behind the second-place Profs (6-1). The top two teams receive a first-round bye in the NJAC Tournament.
