Volleyball: Gameday Preview vs. No. 13 NYU

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team hits the road for three matches this weekend, opening up Friday evening against No. 13 New York University.

LAST TIME OUT

The Red Hawks (17-7, 6-1 NJAC) matched their longest winning streak in program history with their 13th straight win as they blanked Misericordia 3-0 on Senior Night Tuesday evening. CARLY WATERMAN notched a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs, while DELANEY ST. PIERRE handed out 30 assists in the victory.
 
AWARD SEASON

GIANNA ARIAS was chosen as the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 5.0 blocks and 5.5 kills in a 4-0 week. Arias also became just the fifth student-athlete in program history to record six solo blocks in a game and just the third to do it twice. In Saturday's five-frame thriller against host Hunter, she notched seven kills and six solo rejections in the victory. She capped off her week by tallying seven solo blocks in four sets against Mount St. Mary, helping the team close out the week.

NYU REPORT
The Violets are 17-1 on the season, with their lone setback coming to Carnegie Mellon on Sunday. After knocking off Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, the Violets clinched the No. 1 seed in the 2021 University Athletic Association Women's Volleyball Championship.
 
LAST MEETING

NYU earned a straight-set victory on October 10, 2019, as Waterman was the lone Red Hawk with double-digit kills as she tallied 10.
 
SERIES HISTORY

Montclair is 2-16 all-time against NYU, winning a four-set match in 2016 and a five-setter in 2018. In 2018, LEAH HIGGINS hammered home 15 kills while Waterman notched a double-double of 12 kills and 20 digs.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks close out the NYU Tournament on Saturday as they face Stevens at 12:30 pm and Catholic at 3 pm.
