Melendez Hat Trick Paces No. 5 Men's Soccer in 7-0 Victory

Red Hawks Top CCNY for 12th Straight Win

Montclair, NJ – Freshman forward EDWIN MELENDEZ scored a hat trick and collected an assist as No. 5 Montclair State rolled to its 12th straight victory in a 7-0 win over City College of New York at MSU Soccer Park on Monday evening.

CHRISTIAN BERNAL added a goal and assist as the Red Hawks tied the mark for the second-longest winning streak in program history with the 1969 team that won its first 12 matches. Only the 2008 squad, which captured its first 21 contests, had a longer run of consecutive wins.

EVAN CHACON got Montclair State on the board 97 seconds into the contest as he recorded his second of the year off an assist from MICHAEL CASPER. Melendez made it 2-0 at the 9:51 mark on a penalty kick with REED KARSEN extending the lead to three goals seven minutes later. It was the sixth of the year for Karsen with Bernal getting the helper.

The Red Hawks led 3-0 at halftime and tallied three times in a 6:51 span during the second half. Melendez netted his second of the game at 60:30 with SEAN MILELLI scoring his first of the year five minutes later. Melendez capped the run at 67:21 knocking in a pass from Casper, who got his third assist of the game.

Melendez became the first Red Hawks to record a hat trick since Matt Neto did it in the 2019 season opener versus Marywood with Casper's three assist the first for a Montclair State player since 2018 when BROGAN QUIGLEY had three against Mt. St. Vincent.

Melendez set up the final goal scored by Bernal with 7:15 left.

Goalkeepers ANDRES LEZME, JULIAN GUZMAN and CHARLIE REVY combined on the shutout for MSU, which did not allow a shot in the contest. The shutout was Montclair State's 12th of the season.

The Red Hawks will close out their regular season on Wednesday, October 27 hosting Rutgers-Newark in their final NJAC contest. MSU clinched the top seed in the conference tournament on Saturday with their 2-1 win at Rowan and will receive a first-round bye when the tournament begins on Saturday, October 30. Montclair will host a semifinal contest on Wednesday, November 3.
