Montclair, NJ – Washington College's Greg Adams and Eric Gwadz each scored in the final 20 minutes as Washington College (MD) knocked off Montclair State, 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday evening.
Goalkeeper Anthony Pinto stopped five shots as the Shoremen (15-4-1) advance to the Sectional Tournament next weekend, November 20-21 at a site to be determined. Washington College will face two-time defending champion Tufts University in the sectional semifinals.
SHANE KEENAN had four saves for the Red Hawks (17-4-1). Montclair State was making its 20
th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Red Hawks outshot the Shoremen 8-1 in the first half, and nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute.
JOSIAH CRAWFORD sent a shot stopped by Pinto. The rebound came back out to Crawford, who put forth another attempt toward the goal that was kicked by a Washington College defender keeping the match scoreless.
Those would be the only two shots on net for MSU through the first 45 minutes. The Shoremen would get a chance of their own with a second before the halftime horn, however, Dominic Miller's footer was scooped up by Keenan.
In the second half, each team got a chance early as Harrison Malone had a shot saved by Keenan. Moments later, it was Pinto's turn as he snared an
IAN CHESNEY shot in the 49
th minutes.
The Shoremen snapped the tie at the 71:40 mark as Emanuel Kouadio found Adams along the left side. The latter pushed the ball to within 20 yards before firing a shot past Keenan inside the far post for his ninth of the season.
Montclair State would get two opportunities after the goal, but both were saved by Pinto. The first came off the foot of
JANBI KAGHADO at 76:02, with the second s diving punch-out against Crawford two minutes later.
Gwadz added the insurance marker with 1:41 left, scoring his eighth of the year.
Montclair State outshot Washington College, 18-7 and held the edge in corner kicks, 5-1.
