Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Game at Stevens

Hodges Nets 16 for Red Hawks

Box Score Hoboken, NJ – Stevens institute of Technology forward Jess Broad scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Ducks pulled away in the fourth quarter for  69-54 victory over Montclair State at Canavan Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Elissa Nsenkyrie added a career-best 16 points as Stevens (3-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak against its intra-state rival winning for the first time in the series since an 83-79 overtime win at the Panzer Athletic Center during the 2008-09 campaign.

Sophomore guard KENDALL HODGES tallied 16 points along with seven rebounds for the Red Hawks (1-2).

Tied at 15-15 after one quarter, MSU was able to build a nine-point lead in the second as it outscored the Ducks 14-4 over a seven-minute span. NICKIE CARTER capped the spurt with a driving layup that made the score 31-22 with 1:54 to go before halftime. Danielle Cornetta answered for the hosts, who were able to trim that deficit down to 32-28 as Nsenkyire hit a jumper with five seconds left.

But Stevens turned it around in the third quarter, outscoring Montclair State 23-13, including an 11-3 run in the final two minutes to take the lead. Kelly Corval put the Ducks in front 45-42 with a three-pointer. After KELLY SMITH converted a three-point play at the other end, Cornetta connected with a minute to go and Broad added the final four points giving the Ducks as 51-45 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, a Hodges jumper got Montclair within 51-47, however, the Ducks pulled away with a n 18-1 run over six minutes, taking a 67-48 lead with 1:57 to play as Allie Moss made two free throws.

Moss finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Stevens, which got right points apiece from Cornetta and Meghan Douglas. Amber Porrett had seven boards.

Carter totaled nine points for MSU with MEGAN DUFFY adding eight along with three rebounds. TRISHA PETERSON collected seven board with Smith adding six.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, November 23 with their first New Jersey Athletic Conference contest of the year. MSU is in Union, NJ to take on Kean University with tipoff in Harwood Arena scheduled for 8:00 pm.
