Women's Basketball Downed by Kean in NJAC Opener, 69-61

Duffy Caree-High 22 Points; Peterson Grabs Career-Best 17 Boards

Union, NJ – Kean University's Shannon McCoy posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Cougars battled back in the fourth quarter for a 69-61 victory over Montclair State.
 
Brittany Graff added 14 points and eight boards. Sarah Olivero chipped in with 13 points as the Cougars (3-4, 1-0 NJAC) overcame a nine-point deficit.
 
Sophomore MEGAN DUFFY posted a career-high 22 points for Montclair State (1-3, 0-1 NJAC), which dropped its second straight contest. JULIA SUTTON added 13 points, while NICKIE CARTER had 11 points and five steals. TRISHA PETERSON grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds.
 
In the fourth, Kean opened the period with a 12-2 run over four minutes. McCoy scored four, including the first two points from the foul line. Carter answered with a jumper for MSU. However, Kayla Anderson made two at the stripe, and a Macy Seaman layup with 7:21 left closed the gap to 48-43. McCoy hit two more free throws, and the score was 48-47 after Olivero connected on a step-back jumper. Graff gave the Cougars the lead at 49-48 with 5:43 left to cap the spurt.
 
The teams would trade baskets, with Sutton hitting a three for the Red Hawks, giving Montclair a 53-51 advantage with just under four to play. Anderson tied it back up with a field goal, and Kean hit four in the row at the line taking a 57-53 lead with 2:10 to go. Seaman added a layup 30 seconds later for a six-point margin.
 
Montclair State got one back on a Riley Mulligan foul shot, but that was countered by two free throws from Graff with 1:02 remaining, making the score 61-54. Kean would hold on to that margin as it went 7-of-8 at the line down the stretch. Graff finished off the victory with two foul shots with 17 ticks left.
 
MSU trailed 24-17 at the half but used a 22-6 run to turn that deficit into an eight-point lead. Duffy scored 12 of those points as Montclair led 41-33 after a three-point play by Duffy with 2:52 remaining in the quarter. Duffy hit again to extend the lead to double-digits. She gave Montclair a 45-35 advantage in the final minute with a jumper in the paint.
 
Peterson (seven points) had four steals with KENDALL HODGES pulling down six rebounds. 
 
The Red Hawks are now off until Wednesday, December 1, making its first appearance at the Panzer Athletic Center. Montclair State hosts Ramapo College at 6:00 pm.
