Montclair, NJ - The Red Hawks hit the road for their final two contests of the season, starting with Saturday's contest. Montclair State will make the short nine-mile trek to Wayne to face William Paterson University.
MSU got back into the win column for the first time in over month last week with a 20-7 win at Sprague Field against Rowan University. Junior defensive lineman
DIMITRI PALI recorded three sacks and the Montclair State defense limited Rowan to just 154 total yards as the Red Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak. Senior quarterback
JA'QUILL BURCH threw for two touchdowns and the Red Hawks ran for 206 yards as it won for the first time since September 25 in addition to picking up its first NJAC win of the season.
ABELLANY MENDEZ finished with 82 yards on 21 carries while
MAKAI MICKENS and
DAN RAMOS added 53 and 46 yards, respectively for MSU, which matched its season-high with 386 yards of total offense.
ERIC COWAN had five receptions for 41 yards, while NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Week,
REILLY NELSON had four for 36. Linebacker
DORIAN GASHI, the NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week, collected seven tackles and a sack with
BRENNAN RAY and
MICHAEL STEFKOVICH each totaling six.
SEAMUS NELSON recorded four tackles along with a sack.
William Paterson controlled both sides of the football as the Pioneers (4-4, 2-2 NJAC) earned a 20-6 victory against visiting Kean last week. Quarterback Spencer Lee finished 15-of-24 for 172 yards and a touchdown with sophomore Terrique Riddick rushing 23 times for 42 yards. Taz Burton caught four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Jo Jo Kirby, the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, led all players with 13 tackles and added an interception. Jared Selgado had seven stops along with a pass breakup for the Pioneers, who owned a 331-163 advantage in total offense and won the turnover battle, 5-1.
Saturday's game will be the 51st meeting between the Red Hawks and Pioneers, a series dominated by Montclair State. MSU has won 46 of the previous 50 with one tie, a 7-7 deadlock in 1979. Montclair won 22 in a row from 1993 through 2015, a streak that was snapped with an 18-13 loss in 2016. The Red Hawks won the last meeting, back on April 2 in the abbreviated Spring campaign, a 28-0 victory that gave Montclair State the NJAC North championship.
