Women's Basketball Pulls Away for Holiday Tournament Victory, 67-40

Sutton Drops 23 as MSU Downs Neumann, Advances to Championship Game

Montclair, NJ – Senior guard JULIA SUTTON finished with 23 points leading four players in double figures as Montclair State doubled-up Neumann University in the second half for a 67-40 victory in the MSU Holiday Tournament on Wednesday evening.


Guards NICKIE CARTER and KENDALL HODGES finished with 12 and 11 points each as the Red Hawks evened their record at 5-5 on the year with their third straight victory. The Red Hawks will face Mary Washington in the championship game on Thursday, December 30 at 4:00 pm.

 

Terea Hunt had 12 points and five rebounds for the Knights (4-6), who will play in the third-place game on Thursday at 2:00 pm.
 

After the first quarter, Montclair led 17-8 and stretched that to a 13-point lead as Sutton scored on a layup for a 21-8 advantage two minutes into the second. A MEGAN DUFFY layup with 4:45 to go matched the 13-point lead before Neumann managed to cut the deficit down to 26-20 at halftime after Allyson Wills sank two free throws with 10 seconds remaining.
 

MSU opened the second half with an eight-point run as it held the Knights off the scoreboard through the first three-plus minutes. Hodges netted the first three with Sutton adding a three-pointer before two free throws from Hodges made the score 34-30 with 6:25 to go in the third. Sutton hit a three later in the period, and a layup by ANNIE WALSH capped a 21-7 quarter that gave the Red Hawks a 47-27 lead heading into the fourth.
 

Sutton finished 6-of-11 from behind the arc and added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Duffy chipped in with 10 points while TRISHA PETERSON pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to handing out six assists.
 

Montclair State outrebounded Neumann, 48-38, including 16 on the offensive glass that turned into 16 second-chance points. MSU also turned 18 Knights' miscues into 19 points.
 

Aubrie Breisblatt had seven points for Neuman, which got six points apiece from Wills, Tierra Harris, and Madison Stewart. Harris totaled eight rebounds.
