Montclair, NJ – Sophomore guard Keegan Schwab scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to earn MVP honors as Mary Washington captured the MSU Holiday Tournament with a 56-44 victory over Montclair State on Thursday afternoon.

Junior guard Ashley Martin added a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds along with four steals for the Eagles (11-1), who claimed their sixth straight victory. Sophomore Jordan Carpenter (11 rebounds) was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Schwab.

Sophomore guard KENDALL HODGES led all scores with 20 points for MSU (5-6), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Hodges was selected to the All-Tournament.

UMW pulled out to an 18-9 lead late in the first quarter thanks in part to a 10-2 run with four minutes to go. Schwab had the first five points with Bri Harper draining a three-pointer. Montclair State would close the game with the final five points, including a three by Hodges with 46 seconds to go as the Red Hawks trailed 18-14 after one.

In the second, Mary Washington tallied the first seven points and kept MSU off the board for the first three minutes as it widened its lead to 25-14.  Tory Martin drove in for a layup with 1:09 to go giving the Eagles their largest lead of the half at 31-17. ANNIE WALSH knocked down a three at the other end for Montclair State, however Ashley Martin's foul shot in the final seconds sent UMW into the break with a 32-20 advantage, a double-digit lead it would hold on to through the remainder of the game.

Tory Martin tallied 10 for the Eagles with Megan Baxter getting five. UMW outrebounded Montclair 48-36, including 14 in the offensive column.

NICKIE CARTER had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists for the Red Hawks. MEGAN DUFFY totaled five points along with four rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, January 3 taking on Salisbury University at the Panzer Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 pm.
