Montclair Falters at Kean, Suffers First Loss, 90-85

Callender, Williams Net 17 Points

Union, NJ – Junior guard Jailen Jamison and sophomore guard JD Daniels combined for 15 points in the final six-plus minutes as Kean University knocked off Montclair State, 90-85 in the first game of an NJAC back-to-back, home-and-home set at Harwood Arena on Friday evening.

Jamison finished with 25 points and Daniels 22 as the Cougars (1-2, 1-2 NJAC) picked up their first victory of the season and the first for new head coach David Turco. Kean has won two straight against MSU following a nine-game losing streak.

Senior IRVING CALLENDER IV and freshman AMIR WILLIAMS scored 17 points apiece for Montclair State (2-1, 2-1 NJAC), which dropped its first game of the season.

The Red Hawks led 77-70 with 6:27 to play as DEVIN COOPER scored on a layup. But the Cougars quickly erased the deficit as Jamison hit two free throws with Daniels drilling a three-pointer cutting the deficit to 77-75 with 5:03 left. Jared Latane tied the game with a layup off a steal by Myles Owens and Kean took the lead as a Nate Lyles' layup put the Cougars in front 79-77 with just under four minutes left.

Montclair snapped the Cougar run with a free throw, however, Jamison answered with a layup for a three-point lead. MSU freshman AMIR WILLIAMS hit from behind the arc to get the Red Hawks within 82-80, but Daniels counter with a layup on the other end. Jamison made two at the line to extend the lead to 86-80 with 1:25 to play.

Sophomore guard KEYON PRYCE made it a four-point game on two foul shots with 66 seconds on the clock. Daniels answered that with two of his own before Pryce's three-pointer cut the lead to 85-88 with 48 seconds remaining. Jamison was fouled with 20 seconds and hit one attempt and, after a Red Hawk miss, hit one last free throw for the final margin.

The Cougars finished with game on a 20-10 run over the final six minutes, making 5-of-7 from the floor and more importantly 9-of-12 at the foul line.

Jamison added nine rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Lyles chipped in with eight points.

Pryce added 13 points for Montclair State, which got 11 points from Cooper (seven assists) and 10 points along with six rebounds by STEVEN BREEMAN. Williams led the Red Hawks with nine rebounds while KIERAN FLANAGAN pulled down seven in addition to three assists.

The two teams meet again on Saturday, February 13 as the scene shifts to the Panzer Athletic Center in Montclair, NJ for a 2:00 pm tipoff.
