Men's Basketball Topped by New Jersey City

Mitchell-White Tallies Double-Double in Setback

Jersey City, NJ: The Montclair State men's basketball team was topped by host New Jersey City University 76-67 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action Friday.

The Red Hawks (5-2, 5-2 NJAC) and Gothic Knights (4-1, 4-1 NJAC) will meet again tomorrow at 3 pm inside the Panzer Athletic Center to close out the regular season.

Montclair State opened up a five-point advantage early on after JOSEPH RADI connected from deep off a feed from MYLES MITCHELL-WHITE. A 9-4 Gothic Knight spurt leveled the game at 16 before the hosts embarked on a 6-0 run to grab a six-point lead. The Red Hawks stopped the run as DEVIN COOPER hits a three-pointer with 6:07 left in the first half.

The Gothic Knights kept putting pressure on the Red Hawks and opened up a nine-point advantage on a jumper by Keshon Smith. The Red Hawks continued to battle back and held NJCU without a point for nearly four minutes late in the first half and used the momentum to get within a pair. Cooper was the catalyst, tallying four free-throws during the stretch. Over the last 51 seconds of the frame, NJCU scored the final six points to grab an eight-point advantage entering halftime.

Montclair State shot just 22.2% (8-of-36) from the floor in the first half, and the two sides combined for 29 first-half turnovers.
Over two minutes went by in the second half without a point before rookie KIERAN FLANAGAN hit a three to get MSU within five. That Flanagan triple was the Red Hawks lone make from the field in the first 5:32 of the stanza, yet a Mitchell-White layup brought the team within one at 38-37. The Red Hawks briefly regained the lead two minutes later, as Mitchell-White hit a jumper to pull MSU in front by one.

The hosts built a 58-52 lead before Mitchell-White's three-pointer at the 6:12 mark trimmed the deficit in half. The lead swelled to double-digits after a Smith layup with 2:23 left, and the Red Hawks were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Red Hawks were led by a double-double of 19 points 10 rebounds from Mitchell-White. Senior IRVING CALLENDER IV had 10 points in the setback. Ryan Savoy came off the bench to tally 19 points and 11 boards for the Gothic Knights, who also received a double-double from Denzel Banks.
