No. 4 Cabrini Hands Men's Lacrosse Second Straight Loss

Red Hawks Fall to Cavaliers, 14-6

Montclair, NJ – Senior midfielder Ty Kosack scored four goals while senior midfielder Mike Gerzabek added three goals and an assist as fourth-ranked Cabrini University downed Montclair State, 14-6 at Sprague Field on Sunday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Drew Supinski had a goal and four assists as the Cavaliers (2-0) captured the first meeting between the teams since the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.


Sophomore midfielder TYLER MCCREERY scored a pair of goals for the Red Hawks (0-2). Sophomore attack CHRISTIAN BOYLE added a goal and two assists while junior goalkeeper MATTHEW MCLAREN made a career-best 23 saves.


Kostack and Gerzabek each scored in the first three minutes to put Cabrini up 2-0. Montclair State's Joe Covio got one back with 9:08 to play, however, Jake Huey won the ensuing faceoff and scored seven seconds later, sparking a four-goal run. Jake Klein, Matt LoParo, and Gerzabek each scored in the spurt as Cabrini led 5-1 after the first.


Gerzabek extended the lead to five goals early in the second with McCreery's first with 5:30 to play cutting the deficit back to 6-2. Cabrini would tally three times in the final 2:31 of the period to take a 9-2 lead into the break.


Kostack scored twice in 97 seconds in the third, the latter on a man-up as Cabrini grew the lead to 11-2. Griffin Shira and Dan Bennett capped off a four-goal spurt with the Cavaliers holding a 13-2 advantage with 6:24 left.


ROBERT BRENNAN converted a man-up opportunity for Montclair with under three minutes remaining in the third and goals by McCreery and Boyle 24 seconds apart to start the fourth made the score 13-5. Gerzabek and AIDAN MAXWELL traded the last two goals for the final margin.


Goalkeeper Matt Sageder stopped seven shots with Matthew Ries going 7-of-12 on faceoffs. Tommy DeLuca and Seamus Hogan led the Cavaliers with five ground balls apiece with Supinski and Zach Kaut each forcing two turnovers.


WILSON SMITH posted nine ground balls for Montclair State and also caused four turnovers.


The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, March 17 as they host Neumann University at Sprague Field with face-off scheduled for 4:30 pm.
