Pomona, NJ – The second-seeded Montclair State volleyball team was knocked off by top-seeded Stockton University 25-12, 25-18, 25-13 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship match Thursday.
The Red Hawks (5-2) fell to Stockton for the second time this season. The Ospreys (7-0) won their second consecutive NJAC Championship. Montclair State was the lone team to take a set off of Stockton this season, winning one set in the season-opener back on March 2.
The Ospreys opened with 10 of the first 15 markers before MSU recorded two straight to trim the set one deficit to three. Rookie
SKYLAR KOWALSKI slammed home a kill before Kowalski, and junior
LEAH HIGGINS teamed up for a double-block. The Red Hawks could get no closer than three, as Stockton broke the frame with eight straight points. Junior
CARLY WATERMAN slammed home a kill to end a 3-0 spurt, but Franceska Gustave pinned home a kill from Emily Sullivan to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
The two sides traded the first eight points pf set two before Stockton tallied 10 of the following 12 points to build a 13-6 edge. MSU pulled level at 14 thanks to a 7-1 rally of their own, punctuated with a service ace from junior
DELANEY ST. PIERRE. Stockton answered back with six straight of their own, including three consecutive kills from Christie Louer. MSU got within five on a service error, but Julie Kohlhoff notched a kill to push Stockton in front 2-0.
St. Pierre notched a kill off a
MADDIE VALKO set to bring the Red Hawks to within a pair at 7-5, but Stockton overpowered them with five straight tallies. The Red Hawks closed to six on an unforced Ospreys error, but Stockton was able to close the match out with 12 of the final 15 points, including a match-clinching kill by Haley Green to claim the championship.
CARLY WATERMAN tallied six kills and six digs for the Red Hawks, as Valko finished with a team-best 13 digs. Sophomore
GIANNA ARIAS had three blocks while St. Pierre handed out 13 assists. Stockton was paced by 14 kills from Green, with Sullivan dishing out 35 assists.
