Higgins, Waterman Lead Volleyball to First Win

Red Hawks Sweep NJCU

Montclair, NJ – Junior outside hitter LEAH HIGGINS collected 11 kills while classmate CARLY WATERMAN totaled 10 as Montclair State used a solid hitting attack in a three-set sweep of New Jersey City University at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.

Sophomore GIANNA ARIAS added seven kills and a pair of blocks for the Red Hawks, who evened their record at 1-1 (1-1 NJAC) with the 25-6, 25-16, 25-17 victory. It was MSU's 12th straight win over the Gothic Knights as it took a 30-8 lead in the all-time series.

Leah Seickendick and Taylor-Michelle Coriolan each had five kills for New Jersey City (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) in its season opener.

Tied at 2-2 in the first set, MSU put up seven straight points, the last on a kill by Waterman for a 9-2 lead. A kill by SKYLAR KOWALSKI and ace from SIYARA HERBERT made it a 15-3 lead before NJCU ended the run recording two of the next three points. Waterman, Higgins, and Arias each had a kill in another six-point spurt as the lead grew to 22-5. Arias accounted for the final three MSU points with two kills and a block giving MSU a 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-6 win.

In the second set, Waterman finished off a pass from sister KELLY WATERMAN for an early 4-1 lead that grew to 9-3 after Kowalski put down a kill. The Red Hawks were up 11-6 before embarking on a 6-1 run that pushed the lead to 17-7. An ace by Herbert doubled-up the score to 22-11 with Arias once again ending a set on kill for a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle with the Gothic Knights and Red Hawks trading leads. Deadlocked at 13-13, Montclair State put up the next four points on kills by Arias, Waterman, and Kowalski to take the lead for good. NJCU closed the gap to 17-15, however, Waterman posted back-to-back kills and added another two serves later for a 21-16 lead. Higgins added one more kill in a final three-point run to finish off the match.

Montclair posted a .361 hitting efficiency for the match committing just nine errors in 83 attempts. Kowalski had five kills along with a pair of blocks. KELLY WATERMAN 25 assists, three kills, and a block with libero MADDIE VALKO registering a team-best 10 digs. CARLY WATERMAN and Higgins had nine digs apiece.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, March 9 with a road NJAC contest. The Red Hawks will be in Union, NJ taking on Kean University at 7:00 pm in Harwood Arena.
