Women's Soccer Wins NJAC Championship on Onyewuenyi Goal, 1-0

Red Hawks Top Camden to Capture Fourth Crown, First Since 2014

Camden, NJ – Sophomore midfielder CHISOM ONYEWUENYI picked the best possible time to record her first goal of the season.

"ChiChi", as she is known to her teammates blasted a shot from 30 yards out in the 71st minute lifting second-seeded Montclair State to the NJAC Championship with a 1-0 victory over No. 1 seed Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday evening.

Onyewuenyi's goal capped off an unbeaten season for the Red Hawks (5-0-2), who claimed their fourth overall conference title and first since the 2014 campaign. It was also the first time Montclair won its championship in regulation with the previous three – 2004, 2012 and 2014 all being decided by penalty kicks.

A rematch of a scoreless draw in Camden back on March 31, the teams continued that trend through the first half with each team mustering up three shots apiece. Only two found their way on target, however the Raptors Chloe Beasley and Red Hawks' PHOEBE BLEDSOE each stopped the only chance each side would get.

In the second half, MSU would get an opportunity in the 52nd minute as EMILY DEGEYTER had a good chance that sailed high over the net.

The Red Hawks would break through as Beasley sent punt toward midfield that was knocked down by Montclair's CATHERINE CARNEVALE and sent on to the foot of Onyewuenyi. The sophomore dribbled three strides before launching a shot over the head of an out-of-position Beasley into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead at the 70:27 mark.

Montclair had a chance to increase the lead less than a minute later, however Beasley was able to snare a header from Onyewuenyi. Rutgers-Camden final opportunity to even the match came in the 78th minute as Lindsay Hernandez put a shot on goal. But Bledsoe corralled the attempt keeping the one-goal margin intact.

From that point, the MSU defense shut down the Raptors not allowing a shot over the final 12:14 of the contest.

Bledsoe the two-time NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, finished with the two saves as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
