No. 23/15 Women's Lacrosse Storms Back to Clip Stockton in Overtime

Costigan Caps Off Rally With Overtime Buzzer Beater

Montclair, NJ – Senior BRITTANY COSTIGAN scored just before the overtime horn sounded as No. 23/15 women's lacrosse erased a six-goal second-half deficit to storm back and beat Stockton 14-13 Saturday.

The Red Hawks (5-0, 3-0 NJAC) fell behind the Ospreys (2-3, 0-3 NJAC) 12-6 with 19:23 left and trailed 13-8 with under 10 minutes remaining.

The two sides traded the first six goals of the afternoon before senior MEGAN MAHLSTADT scored back-to-back tallies for Montclair State to give MSU a 5-3 lead. The Ospreys countered with two of their own in 91 seconds to level things back up at five. TRISTIN KONEN finished off her hat-trick with 6:52 left in the first, but the Ospreys bounced back in a massive way.

The Ospreys held a 10-4 advantage in draw controls in the first half and outshot MSU 22-14 in the first 30 minutes.

Stockton finished off the first half with a pair of goals before scoring five more times in the first 10:37 of the second stanza. Konen scored twice midway through the period to trim the deficit to four. After Nicole Jandras answered for Stockton, the Red Hawks countered with one of the more impressive comebacks in program history.

Costigan won the draw, and 50 seconds later, Mahlstadt found the back of the net for her third goal of the afternoon. After a yellow card to the Ospreys, Mahlstadt was awarded a free-position shot, and it was good, cutting the gap to just three. Possession was vital, and HALEY DORAN won a critical draw to set up the 11th goal. Just 33 seconds after Mahlstadt's goal, she found Costigan, who netted her first of the game.

Stockton forced a turnover and got three shots off, but ALLYN LILIEN denied Casey Shultz on a free position. After a successful clear, Mahlstadt and Costigan linked up once again to get MSU within one for the first time all half. The Red Hawks won the ensuing draw, but Jennifer Toal forced a turnover. As the Ospreys looked to kill time, senior MEGHAN GORMAN turned the Ospreys over, with Costigan scooping up the loose ball.

Montclair successfully cleared, but Doran turned the ball over. Stockton had a chance to run the clock out, but Gorman again came away with a turnover. Mahlstadt was fouled in the restricted area and converted a free-position chance with 19 ticks remaining in regulation. Stockton had one final opportunity in regulation, but Lilien stoned Michelle Pascrell with four seconds left to push the game into overtime.

Stockton forced an early turnover, but Lilien came up with two huge saves, giving Montclair the time to get down the field. Mahlstadt fired a shot high but was alert enough to grab the loose ball. She passed out to AMBER GONZALEZ at the top of the circle. Gonzalez found Costigan, who had slipped behind the defense. The shot went in just as the buzzer sounded, setting off a Red Hawk frenzy.

For the second straight game, Mahlstadt had five goals and two assists. Costigan, who set the program record draw controls Tuesday night, recorded six more to go along with three goals. Konen added five goals while Doran had three draw controls and an assist. Lilien made 15 saves to earn her fifth victory of the season.

The Red Hawks return to action Wednesday, as they take on Rutgers-Camden at 4:30 pm.
