Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State softball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 18 The College of New Jersey in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Saturday.
The Red Hawks (6-4, 5-3 NJAC) fell 10-0 and 10-2 to the Lions (10-2, 9-1 NJAC) in just their third road doubleheader of the season.
The Lions put up two runs in the top of the first inning, as cleanup hitter Lauren Conroy blasted a two-run home run to centerfield. The Red Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and threatened to try things up.
KAYLA GALLO singled to right with two down, rookie
KAYLA COSENTINO was hit by a pitch, and
AMBER REED singled up the middle. The Lions escaped the jam by getting a pop out to the shortstop to end the inning.
TCNJ put up eight runs on eight hits in the bottom half of the fourth, as Julia Mayernik hit a two-run homer in the frame. The Lions sent 14 hitters to the dish in the inning, and
ALYSSA BOROZAN notched a strikeout to end the long inning.
In the nightcap, the Red Hawks managed to draw first blood.
AMBER POWERS walked to lead off the game, and Gallo came up two batters later and hit a home run to centerfield. The Lions cut the lead in half on a run-scoring double by Conroy in the bottom of the first before taking the lead for good in the second. A two-out double and single proved to do the damage, with one of the runs coming unearned.
Senior
KAYLA VOLANTE set the Lions down in order in the third before TCNJ tacked on three runs on four hits in the fourth. The hosts finished off the scoring as Allie Immerso hit a walk-off three-run homer in the sixth to close out the second game.
Gallo collected a hit in each game and provided the two RBI on the day.
The Red Hawks return to the MSU Softball Stadium tomorrow afternoon as they host Stockton University at 1 pm.
