Softball Sweeps Past Rutgers-Newark

Cavallaro Fans 16 Over Two Games

Newark, NJ -  The Montclair State softball team topped Rutgers-Newark 3-1 and 7-5 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (3-1, 2-0 NJAC) played their first games since splitting with William Paterson back on March 20.

ALI CAVALLARO allowed just one hit over the first two innings of the first game, matching zeroes with the Scarlet Raiders (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) hurler. Cavallaro loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the fourth but recorded two straight strikeouts to escape the threat.

The Scarlet Raiders broke the scoreless game in the fifth, as a Jaclyn Arute tripled to lead-off the inning before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Masha Corbett. The Red Hawks battled back, scoring three times in the sixth. JENNA MELUSO and AMBER REED walked before ALYSSA BOROZAN evened the game with a single to right field. Much like she did in the Red Hawks win over William Paterson, DANIELLE SIBILIO provided the go-ahead hit, a two-run single down the right-field line. Cavallaro put runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh but settled to retire the side in both frames to give MSU the victory.

Gallo and Borozan each notched two hits, as Cavallaro fanned 12 in just her second career start.

In the nightcap, the Red Hawks needed just four batters to plate the game's first run. Meluso worked a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout by Gallo. Reed came up and singled a 2-1 pitch into centerfield to plate Meluso and give MSU the 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled their lead in the second, as Gallo reached on a fielding error, scoring AMBER POWERS.

KAYLA VOLANTE worked out of trouble in the second, putting the first two runners on base via a triple and hit by pitch. The senior notched a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to wiggle out of the jam without surrendering a run. Volante and Jackie Lara matched zeroes of the next few innings, with Volante coaxing a double-play to get out of the fifth unscathed.

Montclair added an additional run in the seventh, as Powers, Gallo, and Reed all reached base with one out. Borozan slapped a one-out single to score Powers, and the Red Hawks looked to close things out in the bottom half. The Scarlet Raiders had other thoughts and used four straight singles to level the game at three. The final knock was a single through the left by Lara, who helped out her own cause in the circle.

The Red Hawks took the lead back in the ninth, as Borozan collected her second RBI hit of the game, scoring Meluso. Two batters later, rookie KAYLA COSENTINO walked with the bases to bring in Gallo. Once again, the Scarlet Raiders battled back to tie the game at five, with Lara again pulling the game level with an RBI single down the left-field line.

Montclair State finally closed the door on Rutgers-Newark in the 10th. Meluso singled in the first run before Borozan delivered a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring. The hosts made it interesting, as a Michelle McMillan double nearly scored a run, but a perfect throw by ANNALESA DILAURENZIO went to the cut-off fielder who fired home to gun a runner out at the plate. Cavallaro capped off the victory by getting a strikeout to finish off the two-game sweep.

Borozan went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the second game, as Cavallaro earned the win with 3 1/3 innings of relief, notching four strikeouts. Lara went 2-for-5 with two RBI while throwing 200 pitches in the 10 innings.

The Red Hawks return to the diamond on Saturday as they head to Camden to battle the Scarlet Raptors at 1 pm.
