Sutera Scores Twice as MSU Blanks Rhodes, 3-0

Van Tassel Nets Goal as Red Hawks Win Second Straight

Montclair, NJ – Freshman TORI SUTERA collected her first two collegiate goals as Montclair State posted its second straight victory, 3-0 over Rhodes College at Sprague Field on Friday evening.

Sophomore CARLIE VAN TASSEL added a goal as the Red Hawks improved to 2-1 on the season and defeated the Lynx (2-1) for the third time in as many meetings. The two teams last met in 2015 with MSU picking up a 4-1 win and in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Montclair claimed that contest, 3-2 in overtime.

Montclair State got the first scoring opportunity of the game as LINSEY CHAMPA put a shot on the goal that Riley Marzola knocked. MSU's LAUREN PICKUL did the same against Sam Hutchinson as the game remained scoreless through one quarter.

The defensive battle continued until the end of the second quarter when the Red Hawks broke through. Champa moved the ball deep inside the circle and flipped a ball that deflected off a defender's stick. The ball landed in front on the left side by Sutera, who tapped it in with 23 seconds left for the 1-0 lead.

Montclair held on to the one-goal advantage through the third quarter and into the start of the fourth before Van Tassel increased the lead to 2-0. The reigning NJAC Rookie of the Year collected a ball along the left end line and drove in before firing a shot past Marzola on the left post for her third of the season.

MSU's final goal came with 7:09 to play off a penalty corner. LINDSEY BICHER took the insert pass and pushed it back down low on the left side to GAB MAISTO, who made a perfect pass back across the goalmouth. Sutera was there and calmly slapped in the wide-open shot for her second of the season.

Pickul made the one save before giving way to PAIGE SANTOS as the two combined for Montclair's first shutout of the season. MSU outshot the Lynx, 15-2.

The Red Hawks are now off until Wednesday, September 15 when it travels to Poughkeepsie, NY to face No. 18 Vassar College at 7:00 pm.
