Bethlehem, PA – Sophomore midfielder
GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO tied the match just before halftime, however it would be the weather that won out in the end as Montclair State and Moravian played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening.
The two played through the first five minutes of overtime knotted up when lightning forced a delay. After waiting over an hour, the remainder of the contest was ended. It is the second time in the last four meetings the Red Hawks (4-1-1) and Greyhounds (3-1-1) played to tie as they also played to a scoreless draw in 2017. MSU leads the all-time series, 5-0-2.
Moravian got on the board quickly as the Greyhounds found the back of the net in the seventh minute on Reed Sturza's sixth goal of the season for the 1-0 advantage.
MSU nearly got that back less than a minute later as
IAN CHESNEY fired a shot stopped by Mason LeSage, who then denied
REED KARSEN five minutes later keeping the Greyhounds in the lead. LeSage added two more stops before the Red Hawks drew even with 5:21 to go before halftime.
Off the free kick,
ANTHONY PELAEZ sent a ball down inside the six. Altamirano collected the loose ball and banged in a shot past LeSage tying the match at a goal apiece. It was the third goal of the season for Altamirano.
Both teams would get chances to break the tie early in the second half. LeSage scooped up a Pelaez shot 82 seconds in with MSU keeper
ANDRES LEZME making save on back-to-back attempts in the 48
th minute. Montclair came within a few inches of taking the lead at the 50:36 mark, however, Chesney's shot clanged off the crossbar.
Lezme and LeSage traded saves inside the final 12 minutes as the match headed to overtime.
Each side would get one shot off in the extra period. Pelaez sent an attempt wide 3:04 in. Lezme came up with the last of his seven saves a minute later, stopping a shot by Andrew Goodlof. The game would be delayed with 5:15 left in the OT.
Montclair outshot Moravian 14-13.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, September 18 with their first NJAC contest of the season. MSU will be in Camden, NJ to face Rutgers-Camden for a 1:00 pm matchup with the Scarlet Raptors.
