Volleyball Tops Farmingdale, New Paltz in Tri-Match

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State volleyball team picked up wins over Farmingdale State and SUNY New Paltz in their home tri-match Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (4-6) downed Farmingdale 3-1 before winning 3-0 against New Paltz in the nightcap. The middle matchup saw New Paltz knock off Farmingdale in straight sets.

Leading 8-4 in the opening frame against the Rams, the Red Hawks broke the game open by tallying eight of the following nine points to build a double-digit lead. The Rams could not get any closer than 10 the rest of the period before a bad set handed set one to the host Red Hawks.

Farmingdale constructed a 4-1 lead early in the second set before the Red Hawks called a timeout to regroup. The timeout worked, as the team tied the period at four courtesy of a double-block by VICTORIA TENNON and NADYA ACKERMANIAN. Montclair went back ahead for good thanks to five straight tallies, including three kills from setter DELANEY ST. PIERRE. The Rams closed to within a pair, but St. Pierre dialed up seven consecutive markers with three aces during the spurt. Farmingdale got within three after fending off four set points before KIARA POLANCO pounded home a kill to give MSU a 2-0 lead.

The Rams claimed the third set before Montclair rebounded in the fourth. Back-to-back kills by LEAH HIGGINS with CASSI WAGEMANN serving six straight points turned a two-point lead into an eight-point advantage for the hosts. The Rams didn't go away quietly, trimming the deficit to two. Polanco and Higgins combined for the final four kills over a 4-1 run to close the match out and give MSU the victory.

Polanco had a career-high 17 kills to go along with a team-high 16 digs, while Higgins led the offensive barrage with 19 kills and 10 digs. St. Pierre handed out 40 assists, with seven kills and seven digs for MSU in the win. Farmingdale was led by 22 digs from Madisyn Pozo.

In the day's final match, the Red Hawks trailed the first set 10-8 before reeling off seven of the following nine points to grab a 15-12 lead. New Paltz regained the lead at 19-17 but kills from CARLY WATERMAN, and St. Pierre pulled the set level at 19. Montclair received a crucial kill from Tennon to bring up set points before an attack error gave set one to Montclair.

Higgins and Tennon began the second period with a double-block, and the lead grew to 13-5 after a Hawks attack error. The Hawks closed to within a pair at 18-16, but Ackermanian stopped the run with a kill before KATELYN MONAGHAN served up an ace. The Red Hawks punctuated the second stanza with a big-time rejection from the tandem of St. Pierre and GIANNA ARIAS.

A solo block by the Hawks capped off a 3-0 rally to trim the third set gap to two at 11-9, but the Red Hawks used five points from CARLY WATERMAN to open a seven-point lead. A Waterman ace capped the run. A side out stopped the momentum, but a trio of Hawk attack errors furthered the Red Hawks' pursuit of a sweep. Ackermanian notched consecutive kills to bring up match point, and Montclair finished the match off with a Hawk error to finish the day unblemished.

Waterman paced the Red Hawks with 11 kills, 10 digs, and four aces, while Monaghan chipped in a team-high 17 digs. St. Pierre dished out 32 assists to go along with nine digs and seven kills. New Paltz was led by 22 assists and 13 digs from Cate DiGiacomo, and 16 digs from Mia Waddell.

The Red Hawks resume NJAC play Tuesday as they hit the road to take on Rowan University at 7 pm.
