Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Edged by No. 7 Williams 1-0

Pickul Makes Season-High 10 Saves in Setback

Montclair, NJ – Junior goalkeeper LAUREN PICKUL of the Montclair State field hockey team made a season-high 10 saves, but the Montclair State field hockey team was topped by No. 7 Williams College 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

The Red Hawks' (4-3) had their best chance of the opening 30 minutes came 7:28 in the matchup. Junior LINDSEY BICHER fired a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner, but the Ephs (6-2) defense blocked the shot. Pickul kept Williams off the board, making three saves in the opening frame.

The Ephs broke through for the first goal afternoon 1:34 into the second stanza. Catherine Torres corralled a loose ball and fired a turn-around shot from the left side just inside the right post. Pickul preserved the one-goal deficit by denying a pair of breakaway tries, including one on Shea van den Broek with 3:27 left in the half.

Williams entered halftime with an 11-1 advantage in the shot department, while Pickul tallied seven first-half stops.

The Red Hawks nearly leveled the game 2:31 into the third quarter, but Bicher's drive from just inside the circle was blocked and trickled just wide of the post. The Red Hawks defense played well all afternoon, but the unit was especially tough in the third quarter, limiting Williams to one shot. Pickul was once again active in the fourth quarter, denying three Williams chances with saves. The Red Hawks were unable to find the tying goal, giving Williams the 1-0 victory.

Bicher took both of the Red Hawks' shots, while Emily Batchelor took a game-high five for Williams.

On Wednesday, the Red Hawks hit the road, heading to Center Valley, PA, for a 7 pm matchup against DeSales University.
