Union, NJ - The Montclair State women's soccer team blanked Kean University 5-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening.
The Red Hawks (7-2-0, 3-0-0 NJAC) received goals from five different student-athletes and outshot Kean (3-4-2, 1-1-1 NJAC) 26-7.
Montclair peppered Kean early with shots, but Marissa Cook notched saves on KERRI DRISCOLL, SOFIA AMBROSIO, and MACKENZIE CANGRO in the first 8:26 of the game. Off a missed shot, AILEEN CAHILL gathered her assist and beat Cook to give Montclair a 1-0 lead 9:11 into the match.
The Red Hawks continued to apply pressure, as Kean was held just one shot over the 37:47. Montclair doubled their lead in the 32nd minute, with LAUREN ERNST linking up with KIMBERLY CAMPBELL for the tally. Goalkeeper HALEY MARTIN was pressed into action in the 38th minute but stepped up and made a save on Celine Brady. Montclair had a 16-3 advantage in the shot department by the time the half was over.
It took just 42 seconds for the Red Hawks to add to their lead in the second half. Ambrosio sent in a corner kick, and graduate student ZOE STECK knocked it in for her team-high sixth goal of the year. Martin made a save in the 49th minute, and on the counter-attack, Steck found SAMANTHA HOWARD for the fourth goal of the night.
Montclair capped off the scoring in the 77th minute, with LINDSAY BATHMANN finding RENEE ROCHA for the goal. It was the second consecutive game that Rocha scored in. The Cougars threatened late, with Isabella DiFalco putting two shots on goal. Senior LINDSAY FREEWALT, who entered in the 68th minute, made both saves to preserve the shutout victory.
Steck and Cahill led the way with three shots, as Martin and Freewalt combined to make five saves in goal. Cook made 10 saves for the Cougars in the setback.
The Red Hawks face a stiff test on Saturday as they top-ranked The College of New Jersey at MSU Soccer Park at 1 pm.
