Lukovic Leads No. 8 Men's Soccer in Athey Cup Victory, 3-1

Red Hawks Hand Host Washington College (MD) First Loss

Chestertown, MD – Freshman midfielder AMER LUKOVIC scored twice as No 8 Montclair State captured the Athey Cup with a 3-1 victory over host Washington College (MD) on Sunday afternoon.

Junior forward JANBI KAGHADO also scored a goal as the Red Hawks improved to 3-0 on the season. It is the third consecutive year that MSU has opened a campaign with three consecutive wins and the seventh time in the last 10 seasons.

Del Jenkins scored for the Shoremen (2-1), who suffered their first loss of the year.

Scoreless through the first 33 minutes of the first half, Montclair State scored twice during a 101-second span to grab a 2-0 lead. Lukovic got the first, finishing off a pass from ALEX ZIELONKA from close range for the game's first goal. Kaghado made it a two-goal lead at the 34:58 mark as he headed in a feed from OWEN MURPHY into the upper left side of the goal for his first of the season.

Leading 2-0 into the second half, Lukovic widened the lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute with a direct kick from 22 yards out on the right side that ducked nicely into the upper left portion of the goal.

Goalkeeper ANDRES LEZME earned his second victory in as many days for MSU, which outshot the Shoremen, 12-3 in the contest.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Hunter College at MSU Soccer Park with kickoff set for 3:00 pm.
