Football: Gameday Preview vs. Christopher Newport

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team hosts Christopher Newport for Homecoming Saturday afternoon.

Kickoff at Sprague Field is scheduled for 1 pm, with live stats and video links available on montclairathletics.com. Coverage on the Red Hawks Sports Network YouTube Channel begins at noon. 
 
YEAR 40
The Red Hawks are led by Head Coach Rick Giancola, who enters his 40th season at the helm. He enters the 2022 campaign as the active winningest coach in Division III and is fourth among all NCAA coaches. He has led MSU to 11 NJAC titles and nine NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks (2-5) were edged by TCNJ 18-15 on October 15 in their last game. JAKE CUSANO tallied a safety, while JAMIE HAMILTON and ABELLANY MENDEZ recorded touchdowns. The Lions kicked a 43-yard field goal at the final whistle to snap the 15-15 tie.

The Captains are 5-2 overall and 3-0 within the NJAC this season. They are riding a four-game winning streak, including a 31-7 triumph over William Paterson on their Homecoming last weekend.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Montclair is 3-3 all-time against Christopher Newport and had their two-game winning streak against the Captains snapped last season. Two of Christopher Newport's three wins have come by eight points or less.
 
LAST MEETING
The Red Hawks fell 28-0 to the Captains last season on October 16, 2021. MAKAI MICKENS rushed for 74 yards as DORIAN GASHI had seven tackles. BRENNAN RAY notched an interception as Austin Smith and DIMITRI PALI tallied sacks.
