William Paterson Clips Football In Season Finale

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team fell to William Paterson 17-14 in the season-finale Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks close the season with a 2-8 record, including an 0-6 mark in the NJAC. The Pioneers move to 5-5 and 2-2 in the NJAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks got on the board after BRENNAN RAY blocked a punt that JALEN DAVIS recovered at William Paterson's three-yard line. Ray, traditionally a defensive back, punched the ball in from four yards out as the Red Hawks used a gadget play to go up 7-0.
  • The Pioneers took advantage of a MASON MURDOCK interception, as James Nevels picked the pass off at the MSU 32-yard line and took it back for a touchdown, leveling the game at seven.
  • Montclair State used a little trickery to take a 14-7 lead. After a 75-yard run by ABELLANY MENDEZ flipped field position, the Red Hawks offense sputtered in the red zone. Facing a 4th-and-2 at the WPU two-yard line, the Red Hawks lined up for a field goal but audibled out. AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN took the snap and plunged it up the middle for a touchdown, snapping the 7-7 tie.
  • William Paterson evened things up at 14 with 10:29 to go in the first half, as Mele' Stallings hit Taz Burton for a 30-yard touchdown. The Red Hawks forced a turnover on downs later in the period, as DIMITRI PALI stuffed Nazir Dale on 4th-and-1.
  • The Pioneers took the lead for good in the third quarter, going 66-yard in 12 plays, capped off by a Jorge Leones 29-yard field goal. The Red Hawks forced their second turnover on downs early in the fourth period, with NICHOLAS BURGESS denying Stallings a first down on a 4th-and-5.
  • After failed possessions by both teams, the Red Hawks had one final drive looking to tie or win the game. With Murdock out of the game, McLaughlin hit MATT SPATUCCI for a clutch 14-yard gain on 4th-and-10.
  • McLaughlin brought the Red Hawks to the WPU 15-yard line thanks to a 46-yard pass to CLARENCE WILKINS. Two plays later, Alajuwon Bell forced a McLaughlin fumble and recovered, sealing the win for the Pioneers.
