Women's Soccer Topped by No. 3 Christopher Newport 2-0 in NCAA Second Round

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's soccer team fell to No. 3 Christopher Newport 2-0 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday.

The 17 wins by the Red Hawks this season marked the third-most in program history as the team ends the season with a 17-2-1 mark. Christopher Newport (16-0-2) advances to the NCAA Sectional Semifinal next weekend at a location to be determined.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Captains placed two early shots on frame, with HALEY MARTIN stopping Emma Ricci in both the fifth and seventh minute. The Red Hawks created a scoring opportunity in the 18th minute, with KIMBERLY CAMPBELL driving a low shot that Jaya Daniel plucked.
  • Christopher Newport broke through for the first goal in the 23rd minute, as Kate Eissenburg slipped a pass to Sarah Smith in the box. Smith took a shot that took a deflection and went in, putting the Captains up 1-0.
  • The lead doubled in the 27th minute after Sarah Rhiel sent a corner that Eissenburg headed past Martin, making it 2-0. The Captains took that 2-0 lead into the half and held a 4-1 edge in shots.
  • The second half saw both sides play in the midfield, with Montclair notching the first shot in the 63rd minute off a Campbell header.
  • The Red Hawks continued to hunt for a goal, with ASHLEY DEFRANCESCO having her shot blocked off a free-kick that went out for a corner. Campbell's try was also redirected off the corner, and the Captains cleared out.
