Volleyball Falls in Four Sets To Rowan in NJAC Semifinals

Glassboro, NJ – The No. 5 Montclair State volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 1 seed Rowan University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Semifinals Thursday night.
 
The Red Hawks close out the season with a 17-13 record while Rowan moves on to the NJAC Championship Game against No. 3 Kean Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks opened a 7-3 lead on Rowan early in the first set, with LEAH HIGGINS capping the run off with an ace. The Profs used a 6-1 rally to claim their first lead before Montclair took the edge back on kills from Higgins and GIANNA ARIAS.
  • Rowan crept back in front 17-16, but EMMA HATCHER served up seven straight points to extend the lead to a set-high six points. Hatcher recorded two aces during the run as Arias, DELANEY ST. PIERRE, and CARLY WATERMAN had kills.
  • The hosts fended off three set points before NADYA ACKERMANIAN pinned down a set from St. Pierre to put Montclair State up 1-0.
  • The Profs raced out to a 5-0 advantage in set two, forcing Montclair State into a timeout. The Red Hawks notched four straight points, including consecutive aces from Waterman to get within one.
  • Rowan's 6-2 spurt put them in control of the period. Montclair got within four on an attack error, and Rowan could finish the frame with a 6-1 run to even the match at one.
  • Montclair State took an 8-2 lead in set three, with Rowan calling a timeout to get settled in. With Montclair State leading 14-11, Rowan embarked on a 7-0 run, breaking the set open. The Red Hawks shrunk the gap to two on a double block by Arias and St. Pierre.
  • Rowan finished the stanza with six of the final nine points and took set three on a kill from Courtney Rhoden.
  • The Profs notched six of the first seven markers of set four before a Higgins ace trimmed the gap to three at 7-4. Rowan pushed the lead to double-digits, but three straight unforced errors made it 20-13 Profs.
  • A service error brought up match point, but the Red Hawks didn't go away and notched the following four points. Waterman had a kill before Arias, and St. Pierre registered back-to-back double blocks. After a timeout, Hatcher delivered an ace to make it 24-20. Rowan claimed the match on a kill from Natalie Ogden.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Higgins and Waterman combined for 17 kills, with Waterman tallying a season-high 22 digs.
  • The Red Hawks served up 11 aces over the four sets, led by three from Higgins.
  • Defensively, St. Pierre added four blocks as MIA CAPRIGLIONE and Arias had three.
  • Rowan was led by 11 kills from Ogden and Jena Kaul.
