Men's Soccer Knocked Off By Rowan In NJAC Championship Game

Montclair, NJ – The top-seeded Montclair State men's soccer fell to No. 3 seed Rowan 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Game Friday evening.

With the victory, Rowan (9-5-5) earns the NJAC Automatic Qualification into the NCAA Tournament, while Montclair State (15-2-4) must wait until the NCAA Selection Show Monday at 1:30 pm to see if they have earned an at-large bid to the tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The back-and-forth match featured a scoreless first half, with the two sides combining for nine shot attempts. Rowan's first shot on target came in the 16th minute, with BORIS DEL VALLE making a save on Ryan Cleary.
  • Montclair's best chance in the opening half came in the 21st minute, as Dylan Aportela saved JUSTIN GOLDBERG's left-footed strike. AMER LUKOVIC had a try in the 27th minute, but Aportela dove to his left and deflected it out of bounds.
  • Early in the second half, JOSIAH CRAWFORD intercepted a clearing pass and took a touch before firing an attempt that went wide off the post. The Red Hawks put two tries on the net that were stopped early in the period as time continued to tick away.
  • SHANE KEENAN made two big saves midway through the second period, diving to his left to stop Johnny Troiano in the 69th minute and then Gil Ferreira a minute later. The Profs nearly broke through in the 76th minute, but GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO came back and cleared the as it got behind Keenan.
  • Rowan broke the 0-0 tie in the 78th minute, with Davide Caputo snapping the scoreless game. Caputo sent a ball into the Montclair end of the field, and Keenan came out to challenge. He got a touch on the ball, but it went right back to Caputo, who fired from a distance, and it went in for his second goal of the year.
  • Montclair hunted for the equalizing tally, but it was Profs who scored the game's final two goals. Caputo added his second of the game, chipping a ball off a low pass from Troiano. Caputo completed his hat-trick in the 89th minute, using a strong individual effort to cap off the scoring.
