Women's Soccer Edged by Rowan In NJAC Championship

Montclair, NJ – The top-seeded Montclair State women's soccer team fell to No. 2 seed Rowan in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Saturday.

Rowan (13-0-4) claimed the NJAC's Automatic Qualification to the NCAA Tournament, while Montclair State (16-2-1) must wait until the NCAA Selection Show Monday at 2 pm to see if they receive an at-large bid to the Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides combined for one shot over the first 28:52, with the Profs controlling a majority of possession. Rowan was awarded a corner kick in the 29th minute, and Sarah Bergan served in the cross. Defender Emma DeMaise headed it onto Nina Carlson, who headed the shot past HALEY MARTIN, making it 1-0 Rowan.
  • The Profs doubled their lead in the 39th minute. Gabby Dean had a try cleared off the line by MACKENZIE CANGRO and out for a corner. Bergan served in another great ball, and DeMaise got the first-touch past, Martin, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • The Red Hawks mustered three shots, including one on frame, in the opening period and trailed 2-0 entering halftime.
  • KIMBERLY CAMPBELL's 49th-minute chance was saved by a defender off a corner try before EMMI DENOVELLIS had a trio of opportunities early in the half.
  • Montclair State continued to pepper Calista Burke with shots, as AILEEN CAHILL was stopped in the 75th minute by the NJAC Goalkeeper of the Year. The Red Hawks finally broke through in the 78th minute. EMILY SCHULER found Cahill in the box, and the junior turned and fired, cutting the deficit in half.
  • ASHLEY DEFRANCESCO was denied in the 87th minute before Montclair's final chance came with 1:22 to go. A cross was parried away by Burke right to a JESSICA DESARNO, but her shot went over the bar, and Rowan was able to run out the rest of the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • DeNovellis led the Red Hawks with four shots, as DeFrancesco, Cahill, Campbell, and SAMANTHA GABRIELE had two.
  • Martin made two saves for Montclair, as Burke stopped five in the win.
