Southern Maine Upends Women's Basketball In Las Vegas Finale

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Montclair State women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Maine 64-47 to close out their appearance in the 2022 D3hoops.com Classic Thursday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Huskies (3-6) raced out to an 8-2 advantage over the first 4:25 before the Red Hawks (5-6) closed to within three on a triple by SHANNON HUGHES. Eight of the following 10 markers favored Southern Maine before TERESA WOLAK and Hughes converted layups in the final minute of the first to get the deficit to five.
  • Southern Maine held Montclair scoreless for the 3:32 of the second stanza, opening up a double-digit advantage during the lull. The Red Hawks finished the period strong, whittling the gap to 11 behind five points from ISABELLA ORLANDO.
  • Montclair got to within eight 2:22 into the third on a free-throw from MAHOGANY WORSLEY-WOOTEN, but they went the next four minutes without a basket. NICKIE CARTER broke the dry spell with a triple, and MSU went into the final frame trailing by 21.
  • TRISHA TELLIAN knocked three free-throws late in the fourth to make the sore 60-42 before adding a jumper with 37 ticks left. GENEVIEVE FARA and LYNDSEY ROSS sank free throws in the final 24 seconds to establish the final margin.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Orlando led the Red Hawks with eight points as Wolak snared a team-best eight rebounds.
  • Hughes and Carter added seven points, with Carter chipping in six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
  • Vanessa Vaughan finished with a game-high 15 points and nine boards for the Huskies, with Maria Degifico and Amy Fleming scoring in double figures.

The Red Hawks resume NJAC play Wednesday as they host Ramapo College inside the Panzer Athletic Center at 5:30 pm.
