Montclair, NJ – Junior guard Laney Fox scored 22 points, with sophomore guard Damaris Rodriguez adding 15 points and 10 rebounds as New Jersey City knocked off Montclair State, 59-55 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Jada Camacho posted 10 points and seven rebounds as the Gothic Knights (9-8, 8-9 NJAC) won their second straight and remained in line for sixth place and a potential first-round bye in the upcoming NJAC Tournament. NJCU is a half-game ahead of Stockton, which plays at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday evening.
Junior guard NICKIE CARTER recorded a game-high 24 points for the Red Hawks (14-8, 12-5 NJAC), which saw their eight-game winning streak snapped. Montclair is currently in third place, one game ahead of William Paterson (11-6). MSU closes out its regular season at Rowan on Wednesday, February 16, while WPU takes on Kean, which clinched the No. 1 seed in the tournament earlier on Saturday.
NJCU led by two after one quarter and held a 27-22 lead at halftime. The Gothic Knights had that same five-point margin (38-33) going in the fourth. After KENDALL HODGES began the quarter with a free throw for the Red Hawks, Rodriguez and MSU's MEGAN DUFFY traded baskets before a three-pointer by Carter with 7:27 left pulled Montclair within 40-39.
Fox scored the following four points to boost the lead to 44-39. JULIA SUTTON drained a three to make the score 46-44 with 4:42, and a three by Carter a minute later drew MSU within 48-47. Carter and Camacho exchanged field goals, and Montclair State took the lead for the first time at 51-50 after Sutton's jumper with 2:19 to go.
Camacho put NJCU back in front with a driving layup 33 seconds later, and one free throw each from Jimmirah Johnson and Rodriguez widened the advantage to 55-51 with 43 ticks. After a Red Hawk miss, Camacho was fouled and sank two more at the line for a six-point lead with 31 seconds. Johnson and Hodges traded free throws before Carter hit a three with 11 seconds, getting Montclair State within 58-55. Fox closed it out, making 1-of-2 at the stripe.
Johnson had seven points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Lyiah Allen grabbed nine boards.
Hodges had eight points, six rebounds, and five assists for Montclair State, with OLIVIA VERO recording six points and 12 rebounds. TRISHA PETERSON collected eight rebounds while dishing out five assists.
