Men's Basketball: Game Day Preview vs. Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball team welcomes Rutgers-Newark to the Panzer Athletic Center for a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday evening.

LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday afternoon, Montclair State (12-7, 9-6 NJAC) downed Rutgers-Camden 69-55 to pick up their second consecutive victory. KIERAN FLANAGAN scored a team-high 15 points and tied for a team-best seven rebounds as four different Red Hawks tallied double-figures. The Red Hawks fell behind by seven early but used a 14-0 spurt midway through the opening period to take the lead back for good.

SCOUTING THE SCARLET RAIDERS 
The Scarlet Raiders are 14-7, including 11-4 within the NJAC. They saw their three-game winning streak snapped by Rowan Saturday evening as they fell 80-65. Abe Kromah and Levi Holton posted double-doubles in the setback, while Jamir Patterson added 11 points.

LAST MEETING
The Red Hawks knocked off Rutgers-Newark 62-59 in their last meeting on January 5. After outscoring the hosts 30-20 in the first half, Montclair State held on for the three-point win. The hosts closed to within a pair with 2:32 to go, but STEVEN BREEMAN hit three free throws in the final 16 seconds to preserve the win. Breeman led the way with 19 points as KIERAN FLANAGAN, IRVING CALLENDER IV, and KEYON PRYCE grabbed five rebounds.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Montclair State is 68-43 all-time against their Essex County rivals, including four consecutive victories. Rutgers-Newark's best stretch was when they earned 12 straight wins from February 4, 2012 – January 21, 2017. The Red Hawks snapped that series with a seven-point win on December 2, 2017, behind 21 points from Jovanni Chatham.
 
UP NEXT
On Saturday, the Red Hawks close out their regular-season home slate as they host New Jersey City University at 1 pm. Before the contest, the team will honor seniors DANNY LANE and IRVING CALLENDER IV in a pregame ceremony.
