Montclair, NJ – For the second straight day, Montclair State got shutout pitching and used big scoring innings as the Red Hawks swept Mount St. Vincent by identical 8-0 scores at the MSU Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Pitchers
ALI CAVALLARO,
KAYLA VOLANTE and
SAGE RIZZI fired 10 scoreless innings allowing four hits as the Montclair improved to 14-5 on the season.
DANIELLE SIBILIO and
ANNALESA DILAURENZIO each had two RBI in the opener while
ALYSSA BOROZAN drove in three runs in the second inning.
In the opener, the Red Hawks got all of their offensive run production in the third inning when it sent 12 batters to the plate. After loading the bases,
JENNA MELUSO drove a single to left for the first run and
KAYLA COSENTINO walked forcing in another for a 2-0 lead. Sibilio doubled the score with a two-run double and a
KATIE DEBELL run-scoring double upped the lead to 5-0.
AMBER REED plated the sixth run with a ground out with DiLaurenzio capping the inning on a two-run single.
Meanwhile Cavallaro (8-3) struck out nine and allowed two hits in 4 1/3 innings before Rizzi registered the last two outs. Cosentino and DiLauenzio each finished 2-for-2.
Volante carried the momentum for the second games as she gave up just two hits and struck out in improving to 6-1.
Montclair got two runs in the second on a two-run double down the left field line by Borozan. The Red Hawks pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third. DeBell and Reed each had run-scoring singles with
CHLOE SAPERSTEIN drawing a bases-load walk. MSU put the game away in the fifth. Borozan had an RBI single with Meluso accounting for the final run on a double to left field that scored pinch-hitter
EMILY JACOBS.
Borozan and Meluso had two hits apiece.
Montclair State is back in action on Tuesday, March 29 as it hosts Stevens at 3pm. It will be the first meeting between the two intra-state rivals.
