Montclair, NJ – Senior catcher
DANIELLE SIBILIO homered twice in the opener as Montclair State earned a split of its NJAC doubleheader with William Paterson on Tuesday at the MSU Softball Stadium.
Siblio's two round-trippers helped the Red Hawks (19-14, 3-9 NJAC) to a 7-3 victory in the first game before William Paterson (13-14, 3-9 NJAC) rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.
Sibilio gave MSU 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 with the first of her two homers.
AMBER REED brought home a run in the second with a ground out and an RBI double by
STEPHANIE SERETIS later in the inning pushing the lead to 3-0.
KAYLA COSENTINO had an RBI single in the fourth with Sibilio unloading a three-run shot as the Red Hawks built a 7-0 advantage.
William Paterson put together a rally in the seventh, scoring three times and were still threatening with two outs. However, MSU righthander
KAYLA VOLANTE got a ground ball for the final out.
Volante (10-5) picked up her 10
th win of the season as she allowed three unearned runs and scattered 10 hits with a strikeout. Reed went 3-for-4 with Sibilio, Cosentino, Seretis and
ALYSSA BOROZAN each recording two hits apiece.
Sibilio would give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap as she singled home Borozan, who led off with a single. Borozan and Cosentino each drove in a run in the second inning and a Cosentino RBI ground out in the third gave MSU a 4-0 advantage.
But the Pioneers battled back, tying the score in the fifth as Caitlin Monahan's two-run double tied the game at 4-4. William Paterson took the lead in the seventh. Anna Nunziato stole third and scored on an error for the go-ahead run. Lauren Naveo and Monahan then pulled off a successful double steal putting WPU in front 6-4.
Righthander Jaelynn Miller (5-5) made that hold up as she worked her way out of a little jam in the bottom of the inning. Miller went the final 5 2/3 innings allowing an unearned run and a hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Seretis (0-2) suffered the loss for MSU.
Borozan had two hits for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Saturday, April 23 with their final regular-season home twinbill. Montclair hosts No. 25 The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm on Senior Day.
