Women's Soccer Shuts Out Alvernia 1-0 on Cahill's Goal

Montclair, NJ – Junior AILEEN CAHILL converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to propel the Montclair State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Alvernia in the season-opener Thursday.

The Red Hawks are unbeaten in their last seven season-openers dating back to the 2015 season, going 4-0-3 during that stretch. HALEY MARTIN made three saves to earn the clean sheet, the seventh of her career.

Neither side could break through in the first half, but both teams had golden scoring opportunities. Entering as a substitute, KYLIE PRENDERGAST caused havoc with her speed, generating several quality scoring chances for Montclair State. Martin came up big in the 27th minute, denying Haley Dougherty from just outside the box. The rebound found the foot of Madison Whary, but the senior goalkeeper also denied that shot. NIKI DANZ hit the crossbar with 1:09 left in the opening half before Prendergast's go with 49 ticks left was stopped by Brynn Bock.

Montclair State outshot Alvernia 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes but only attempted one shot on target during the frame.

The Red Hawks peppered Bock with shots early in the second stanza, with TARA LAMBERT's 61st-minute attempt snared by the goalkeeper. KYLINN KRAEMER headed a ball on frame off a freekick, but once again, Bock stopped the try. After failing to convert three consecutive corner kicks, LAUREN ERNST took a ball on the far side and was tripped up inside the 18-yard box. Cahill stepped up to the spot and scored the Red Hawks' first marker of the season with a low shot. The Red Hawks' defense clamped down the rest of the way, holding Alvernia to just one shot on goal during the final 17 minutes.

Ernst and Cahill led Montclair with three shots as Danz, Prendergast, and SAMANTHA ONDRUSH tallied three apiece. Bock made seven saves in the setback for Alvernia.

Montclair State is on the road this weekend for a pair of games in Massachusetts. Up first, the team will face Gordon College at 1 pm Saturday.
