Football: Gameday Preview vs. Delaware Valley

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team hosts No. 14 Delaware Valley University Saturday afternoon.

YEAR 40
The Red Hawks are led by Head Coach Rick Giancola, who enters his 40th season at the helm. He enters the 2022 campaign as the active winningest coach in Division III and is fourth among all NCAA coaches. He has led MSU to 11 NJAC titles and nine NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks knocked off Thiel College 27-6 in their season-opener last Saturday. MAKAI MICKENS rushed for a pair of scores while STEVEN TAFURI blocked a punt that was recovered for a touchdown by JALIL TERRELL. MIKE RAMOS and NICHOLAS BURGESS tallied interceptions in the win.

Sophomore linebacker STEVEN TAFURI was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week as a special teamer after blocking a punt in the third quarter. Tafuri blocked the punt at the three-yard line, where JALIL TERRELL scooped it up and scored.

SCOUTING DELAWARE VALLEY
The Aggies notched a 22-8 win over Westminster College in their season-opener last week. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Aggies outscored Westminster 22-6 over the final two quarters and were led by two touchdowns (one throwing, one rushing) by Louie Barrios IV.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Red Hawks are 12-6-1 all-time against the Aggies but have dropped the last three contests. After meeting every season from 1949 – 1962, the two sides did not meet again until 2000.
 
LAST MEETING
Last season in Doylestown, Pa., the Aggies came away with a 26-2 triumph. Red Hawks punter MILE DJORDJIOVSKI pinned the Aggies deep in their territory in the first, and DORIAN GASHI broke through on fourth down to block a punt. That would be the only scoring of the day for MSU, as they turned the ball over three times on the afternoon.
