Volleyball Drops NJAC Opener to Kean

Box Score Union, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team fell to Kean University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (4-3, 0-1 NJAC) won the first set 25-22, but Kean (3-3, 1-0 NJAC) took the next three 25-8, 25-21, 25-16.

Montclair State stormed out of the gate, notching 11 of the first 16 points. The Cougars responded to get within two at 11-9 before the visitors extended the lead to 18-11. During the run, KATIE RODMAN and DELANEY ST. PIERRE notched aces, and rookie MIA CAPRIGLIONE capped off the rally with a kill. NADYA ACKERMANIAN pinned down a St. Pierre set to make it 21-15, but the Cougars rallied all the back to get within one at 23-22. Capriglione slammed home a kill to bring up set point before St. Pierre tallied an ace to make it 1-0 MSU.

With the second stanza tied at eight, the host Cougars reeled off the following 17 points to level the match at one. The Red Hawks kept the third frame close before three consecutive markers pushed the Kean in front 19-15. Montclair State would get as close as two but could not get closer, and Kean made the match to 2-1. Montclair used a 4-0 run in the fourth set to even the frame at 11, as SKYE RAMSEY and Capriglione notched kills before teaming up for a double block. A 10-1 Cougar spurt broke things up as they would tally the final two points to claim the win.

LEAH HIGGINS tallied a team-high 15 kills while KATIE RODMAN led the way with 21 digs. Kean was led by 17 kills from Ashley Smith and 37 assists from Kylie Brua.

The Red Hawks return to action Friday as they take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 pm in Hoboken, NJ.
