Football: Gameday Preview vs. Salve Regina

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team hits the road Saturday for the first time as they face Salve Regina.

YEAR 40
The Red Hawks are led by Head Coach Rick Giancola, who enters his 40th season at the helm. He enters the 2022 campaign as the active winningest coach in Division III and is fourth among all NCAA coaches. He has led MSU to 11 NJAC titles and nine NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks suffered their first setback of the season, dropping a 14-6 decision to No. 14 Delaware Valley Saturday. The defense surrendered 213 yards to the Aggies while KIMANI CARRINGTON tallied the first interception of his career. MASON MURDOCK tossed a touchdown to CLARENCE WILKINS for the second straight week to account for the lone scoring play.

SCOUTING SALVE REGINA
The Seahawks are 2-0 on the season, notching a 7-0 win over Norwich and a 13-10 win over MIT last week. Josh Letellier caught the go-ahead touchdown with 24 seconds left to push Salve Regina ahead for good.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Red Hawks are 5-3 all-time against Salve and saw their saw two-game winning streak snapped. Before the setback last season, Montclair had won four of the previous five matchups.
 
LAST MEETING
The Seahawks notched a 24-21 triumph at Sprague Field on September 18, 2021. The Red Hawks trailed 17-0 before JA'QUILL BURCH scampered in for a four-yard TD run. After another Seahawk score, the Red Hawks got within 11 on a MAKAI MICKENS 20-yard run. Montclair State got within three on a Burch-to-Mickens 29-yard passing touchdown before MSU forced a punt. The drive sputtered, and an incomplete pass on 4th and 12 gave the ball back to Salve, and they were able to run the clock out.

Montclair State continues their road trip and faces Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 3:30 pm next Saturday.
