Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 16/21 Men's Soccer Clips NJCU 1-0

Montclair, NJ AMER LUKOVIC tallied the lone goal off a rebound to lead the No. 16/21 Montclair State men's soccer team past New Jersey City University 1-0 in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Friday.

The Red Hawks (6-0-3, 1-0-0 NJAC) outshot NJCU (5-1-0, 0-1-0 NJAC) 26-5 throughout the match.

The two sides traded shots on goal early on in the game, and Montclair nearly broke through in the 24th minute, but a header by GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO just sailed high. Two minutes later, Lukovic fired a left-footed try that also missed but not by much over the crossbar. The Red Hawks continued to pepper Nick Linebaugh with chances, but the goalkeeper stood up to the task as he denied OWEN MURPHY in the 38th minute and JOSIAH CRAWFORD in the 41st. The Murphy save came off a free kick, and Linebaugh briefly bobbled the ball, but the keeper recovered in time to smother the rebound.

Keenan preserved the shutout in the 53rd minute as he sprawled out to deflect a shot by Juan Vizcaino. Vizcaino placed the ball on the ground, heading to the far post, but the goalkeeper reached out and deflected it away. On the counter-attack the other way, Lukovic and JUSTIN GOLDBERG had close chances in succession that Linebaugh denied to keep it 0-0 in the 55th minute.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the 66th minute, but the Red Hawks finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute. JASON RICCA took the initial shot that Linebaugh rejected. The rebound fell right to Lukovic, who poked it past Lukovic. Keenan made a stop in the 73rd minute on Maximo Vargas to keep it 1-0. As time was winding down, NJCU had one final try to level, but Keenan stonewalled Jason Salamanca with four seconds to go and fell on the rebound to give the team a 1-0 victory.

Lukovic fired eight shots while Crawford added five in the victory for Montclair State. Keenan tallied four saves to earn the win while Linebaugh made a season-high 12 saves.

The Red Hawks hit the road on Wednesday to face Stockton University at 7 pm.
