Swimming and Diving Sweeps FDU-Florham in 2023 Opener

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened 2023 in a big way, claiming a combined 13 first-place times as they swept FDU-Florham Tuesday.

The men (5-1) notched a 108-51 triumph, while the women (5-3) edged FDU 91-80.

WOMEN'S RECAP

The women's side claimed the top two spots in the 200-medley relay, as SOPHIA SHOPOVICK, ABBY BROCK, CATTY GEYER, and JULIE TIEDEMANN touched the wall in 1:57.72. The foursome of ERIN BARRETT, LILI SHAY, MADELINE ROGERS, and JULIET DI PASQUALE were behind them at 2:02.56.
Tiedemann made it two consecutive wins as she took first in the 200-free in 2:01.09 before rookie ROURKE PERALTA grabbed first in the 50-free (24.95). Peralta tallied an additional victory in the 50-butterfly (27.46), and the team took the top three places in the 100-free. JULIANA SKOPP-CARDILLO was first (56.56), AVA MAFFUCCI was second (57.86), and JULIA WEINREB rounded out the trio in third (59.22).
Shopovick finished off the winners on the women's side with a 29.39 mark in the 50-backstroke, edging Sarah Dougherty by .34 seconds.

MEN'S RECAP

Like the women, the men pulled in the top two times in the opening 200-medley relay. DENNIS DELARGY, BRANDON DO, TYLER DORSETT, and ADRIAN GONZALEZ placed first in 1:43.52 as the foursome of CHRYSTIAN MUHLEISEN, MATT DETTLINGER, JOHN ENGLERT, and JOHN MORRIS were behind them in 1:44.81.
RYAN KAPPES and SPENSER DUBOIS went 1-2 in the 200-free, with Kappes clocking in at 1:48.16 and Dubois in at 1:50.61. The Red Hawks nabbed the first three times in the 50-free, led by a 23.24 mark from LUCAS MIGLIN. Dettlinger was second in 23.55, with DANIEL BARTSEVICH close behind in 23.62.
Do won the 100-IM in 56.17, as Englert and Kappes were second and third in 1:01.67 and 1:02.43, respectively. Englert grabbed an individual win in the 50-butterfly in 25.01, with Gonzalez second in 26.19 and JARED GAYNOR third in 26.91.
Dubois and Muhleisen closed out the victories for Montclair as Dubois was first in the 100-free (49.4) and Muhleisen in the 50-back (26.92).
