Men's Basketball Clips NJCU 79-74 in NJAC Action

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball team earned a New Jersey Athletic Conference victory with a 79-74 triumph over New Jersey City University Wednesday.

STEVEN BREEMAN had a team-best 19 points for Montclair (14-3, 8-2 NJAC), as Jason Battle recorded 19 for NJCU (8-9, 3-7 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks scored on their first possession, and then both sides went cold, combining for no points over the three minutes. It took nearly 10 minutes before a side reached double-digits, with NJCU taking an 11-7 lead.
  • The Gothic Knights used a 6-2 run to take their largest advantage of the night, pulling in front 24-16 with 5:33 left in the opening period. Montclair State finished the half with 16 of the final 24 markers, including six in the final 2:01.
  • NJCU was stingy, limiting Montclair to 2-of-16 shooting behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
  • A Battle triple pushed NJCU in front 42-39, and the lead swelled to five on a jumper in the paint from Battle. The Red Hawks fought back, pulling even at 46 on a MIKE JACKSON layup with 13:46 to play.
  • The back-and-forth second stanza saw the visitors jump back in front 56-52 before Jackson cut the lead in half with a cutting layup. Breeman brought the team within a point on a traditional three-point play, kickstarting a 10-0 run. Pryce recorded a layup, drew the foul, and hit the free throw to give Montclair the lead they would not relinquish.
  • The Red Hawks pushed the lead to a game-high 15 on a Breeman triple but saw NJCU use a 12-2 run to close the game and make it interesting. They could not get any closer as Montclair held on for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Red Hawks shot a blistering 62.96% (17-of-27) from the floor in the second stanza and hit 6-of-11 from three.
  • Pryce notched 15 points, six rebounds, and four assists as Jackson contributed 13.
  • GREG ECK and FRANCISCO PAULINO combined for 21 points off the bench, including 18 in the first half, with several starters plagued by foul trouble.
