Volleyball Takes Down Rutgers-Newark In NJAC Finale

Newark, NJ – The Montclair State University volleyball team knocked off Rutgers-Newark in straight sets to close out their New Jersey Athletic Conference slate on Tuesday.

The Red Hawks (13-12, 3-5 NJAC) remain in the hunt for a berth in the NJAC Tournament, which begins in two weeks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair fell behind early as Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 17-9 advantage. The Red Hawks shook off the early match rust and rebounded with a 7-1 spurt thanks to strong serving from KATIE RODMAN.
  • The visitors closed to within one after an ADDISON CASTLES service, but Rutgers-Newark brought up set point with a kill to lead 24-22. The Red Hawks finished the first with the last four points, as SKYE RAMSEY slammed down three kills during the run, with SHELLEY EATON and LILY THOMAS teaming up for a block.
  • The first set victory propelled Montclair to a 9-4 lead in the second period, as Castles polished off the spurt with an ace. The Scarlet Raiders got within three, but consecutive ZOEY HORN kills capped off a 5-0 run to stretch the margin to 18-10.
  • The Red Hawks reeled off six of seven markers late in the stanza for a 24-12 advantage, but the hosts notched three points to keep the frame going. EMILY CARCICH made it 2-0 Montclair as she recorded an unassisted on set point.
  • With the score 11-10 Montclair in the third, Eaton registered a kill before Hatcher served up back-to-back aces to extend the gap to four. After two unforced errors, Montclair brought the lead to five on kills from SOPHIA LOPEZ and Eaton.
  • Rutgers-Newark scored three straight markers to trim the deficit to 20-16, but Montclair responded with the final five points to complete the sweep. RACHEL CURRAN ensured Montclair came away with a win, serving an ace on match point.
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Curran led the way with 11 kills, as Ramsey and Thomas had nine.
  • Thomas' nine kills marked a career-high for the freshman, hitting .667 (9-1-12).
  • Carcich handed out 41 assists in the victory, the fourth time she has gone over 40 assists this season.
 FROM THE COURT
"I thought we did a really good job adjusting after a very slow start. We didn't have our best game in the first set but worked through it to pull out the win and set the tone for the rest of the match. I thought once we got over the slow start, our offense did a good job, and our passing and defense stepped up. A good way to end conference play; now we will shift our focus to non-conference matches and see what happens in the conference next week." – Head Coach Eddie Stawinski.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks close out the regular season with a four-match homestand, kicking off Friday as they host Hunter College at 7 pm.
