Field Hockey Upends No. 19 TCNJ 1-0 On Eichlin's Penalty Stroke

Montclair, NJ - SADIE EICHLIN scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in overtime as the Montclair State University field hockey team upset No. 19 TCNJ on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks nearly broke through in the first quarter, but the officials ruled that CARLIE VAN TASSEL's shot from outside the circle was not deflected by TORI SUTERA, and the game remained deadlocked at zero. ALEXA ANTONELLI and SAMI BLOOM tallied shots on goal in the first but were denied by the TCNJ goalkeeper.
  • The Lions looked to score midway through the second stanza, but goalkeeper MCKENNA LAMAN made the stop. The first half was a defensive battle as the two sides combined for a mere six shots, with Laman making three first-half saves.
  • The Red Hawks had a golden opportunity to snap the scoreless game in the third, as Eichlin's shot was stopped. Late in the period, Bloom's try with a goalkeeper down was blocked by a Lions defender.
  • Neither was able to score off corners in the fourth period, and the game would be decided in overtime. Van Tassel slipped a pass through the Lions' defense to Bloom, but the newcomer was denied by a sprawling goalkeeper.
  • Van Tassel drew a penalty stroke with 4:18 remaining in the first extra session, and Eichlin stepped up for the stroke. The sophomore rifled a shot high and beat the keeper, sending Montclair out a winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Montclair topped TCNJ for just the 11th time in program history.
  • The Red Hawks outshot TCNJ 12-10, including 6-4 on goal.
  • Bloom and Antonelli had four shots, as Laman made four saves.
FROM THE FIELD
"TCNJ is always a huge rivalry game for us, so this win is special for our program. I'm proud of our effort to play a full 60 minutes and prove that we can beat the best teams in our conference and top teams in Division IIII. I think we outworked TCNJ in many phases of the game and we entered the overtime period with confidence and a do-whatever-it-takes mindset. I am so proud of Sadie for executing her stroke to win the game for our team. She has shown tremendous growth in her individual confidence this season and her success today is a direct result of her consistent work ethic." - Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly.
