Football Edged By Rowan, 21-14

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University football team was clipped by Rowan University 21-14 on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (4-4, 3-2 NJAC) forced a turnover on Rowan's first possession after Montclair turned the ball over on fourth down. The Profs reached the Montclair 31-yard line before ALEX BUCHWALD intercepted a pass.
  • Montclair drove down to the Rowan 19, but GREG CASIMIR's 39-yard field goal was no good as it hit the right upright. Three plays later, Rowan connected on a 76-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.
  • After MICHAEL FITZPATRICK's 50-yard punt, NATE EXIL intercepted a pass and took it back 27 yards, giving Montclair possession at the Rowan 38. Six plays later, ABELLANY MENDEZ plunged in from 10 yards out, leveling the game at seven.
  • Rowan regained the lead on the ensuing trip down the field, going eight plays in 63 yards to go up 14-7. The Red Hawks nearly executed a perfect two-minute offense, but HENRY LEWIS was stuffed at the one-yard line as the half expired.
  • The Profs took the second-half kickoff 82 yards to bring up a first and goal, breaking through for a seven-yard score to go up 21-7. After a Montclair turnover on downs, Rowan missed a 27-yard field goal, keeping it at a two-score margin.
  • Fitzpatrick pinned the Profs deep after a booming 59-yard punt and, after Montclair regained the ball with 8:15 left, went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive to get within seven. AIDAN MCLAUGHLIN used the quarterback sneak and broke the plane for the rushing score.
  • The Red Hawks forced a Rowan punt, and RYAN VISALLI got his fingertips on the ball, as the punt went for just 12 yards. After an 11-yard completion to ZACH LEWIS, McLaughlin was intercepted on a pass across the middle, and the game ended on three Rowan kneel-downs.
