No. 9 Women's Soccer Topples Arcadia, 2-1

Glenside, Pa. - The No. 9 Montclair State University women's soccer team topped Arcadia University 2-1 on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair peppered the Knights with chances early, as KERRI DRISCOLL had a header go wide in the seventh minute. JULIE BAKER and AILEEN CAHILL also had tries just go wide early in the match.
  • Off a free kick in the 21st minute, EMMI DENOVELLIS served a ball in on frame that the goalkeeper bobbled. The keeper recovered and picked it up before it crossed the goal line.
  • The Knights goalkeeper made a sprawling denial on NICOLE RICCI in the 33rd minute before the Red Hawks scored 39 seconds later. KYLIE PRENDERGAST slipped a pass to Cahill just inside the 18. The senior turned and fired low, beating a diving goalkeeper far post to give Montclair a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute. Off a short corner, the ball returned to O'Callahan, who served in a perfect cross to the far post. KELLY FITZGERALD was there and headed it past the goalie, putting Montclair up 2-0.
  • Montclair almost made it three after DeNovellis' long shot was parried off the crossbar and out. The Knights cut the deficit in half thanks to a header off a corner kick in the 71st minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Cahill led the Red Hawks with nine shots.
  • Prendergast finished with five shots, as O'Callahan added four.
  • Montclair outshot the Knights 30-4, including 10-1 on frame.
FROM THE FIELD
"I thought our first half was excellent against a very well coached team.  I knew they would come out firing in the second half and I loved how we withstood the pressure and won another match against a quality opponent." Head Coach Pat Naughter.
