Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5 Men's Soccer Edged By No. 7 Connecticut College In Penalty Kicks

Fredericksburg, Va. – The No. 5 Montclair State University men's soccer team battled No. 7 Connecticut College to a 2-2 draw but were knocked off 4-3 in penalty kicks in the Sectional Semifinal on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks finished their season with a 19-2-2 record and a perfect 9-0-0 in the NJAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Camels opened the scoring in the 15th minute, as a long through ball sprung Matt Scoffone, who beat SHANE KEENAN with a low shot. Connecticut College doubled their advantage in the 28th minute as Matt Quiros-Newton converted a feed from Scoffone.
  • SHANE KEENAN kept it a two-goal deficit, making two saves late in the frame as the Red Hawks trailed 2-0 at the break. The Camels outshot Montclair 5-1 over the first 45 minutes.
  • The Camels continued to apply pressure, with Keenan making saves early in the second stanza. The Red Hawks broke through and cut the lead in the half in the 52nd minute. ANTHONY VIOLA won a ball along the far sideline, and his cross came out to OWEN MURPHY. Murphy fired from a distance and beat the keeper for his sixth of the year.
  • Montclair leveled the game in the 61st minute, capitalizing on a costly Camels turnover. AMER LUKOVIC stripped a defender inside the 18-yard box, turned, and fired a shot that eluded the goalkeeper, tying the game at two.
  • The Red Hawks nearly took the lead in the 68th minute, but ENIR RADONCIC's header was wide. Montclair's defense held Connecticut College to one shot target after the tying marker, with Keenan sending the game into overtime thanks to a stop with 42 seconds left.
  • Montclair controlled the first overtime and had a goal waved off after a foul off a set piece. Radoncic and Murphy rang tries off the crossbar early in the second overtime, with a rebound off Radoncic's miss ruled offside as it was put into the goal. Neither side found the winning marker, and penalty kicks would be needed to decide the winner.
  • Lukovic was denied in the opening round of the penalties while IAN CHESNEY and OSBIN MENDEZ converted, as the Camels went 3-for-3 in their first three kicks. Viola scored in the fourth round, and Connecticut College pushed their fourth shot wide of the post. ALFREDO ROJAS was stopped by a diving goalkeeper before the Camels advanced with a goal that glanced off a diving Keenan and the crossbar.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lukovic led the Red Hawks with four shots, as Murphy added three.
FROM THE FIELD
"It was a great run that I felt ended too soon. Congrats to Connecticut College for advancing to the Elite 8. We had to dig ourselves out of a huge hole vs. one of the best teams in the country, and we did it. We had four great opportunities and two goals called back down the final stretch. The game was there for the taking.  PKs are a tough way to go out. I'm really proud of our guys. This is a special group. They deserve better, but we will learn from it and keep moving forward." Head Coach Todd Tumelty.
